How to Fix QuickBooks Error: Restore Failed in QB Version 2010 to 2014

What Cause QuickBooks Restore Failed Error


  1. The backup file that you have created using QuickBooks 2010 is a standard backup file. You are required to create a special backup file in order to restore the file in QB 2010 and later version.

  2. You are trying to restore the company file in a different version of QuickBooks like the file that has been created in QuickBooks UK version cannot be restored in QuickBooks US version.


Steps to Resolve QuickBooks Restore Failed Error


Troubleshooting Step 1: Check the version of QuickBooks in which the backup file was created and the version of QuickBooks you are restoring the file into


  1. Press Windows + R key on your keyboard to open Run windows.

  2. Type Control Panel and hit Enter.

  3. Click Uninstall or Change a Program and look for QuickBooks, you can see the version of QuickBooks here.

  4. Make sure the version of QuickBooks that is installed is the same as the version of QuickBooks that is used to create the company file.

  5. In case you find a different version installed then double-click QuickBooks from the list and select Uninstall.

  6. Follow the on-screen instruction to remove QuickBooks and then re-install the correct version of QuickBooks.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEP 2: CONVERT THE FILE USING QUICKBOOKS INBUILT CONVERSION TOOL


  1. Open QuickBooks and navigate to File> Utilities> Restore Backup For Earlier QuickBooks Version.

  2. Hit the Browse button beside the Backup File Name and select the File and hit Open.

  3. Now again click the Browse button beside the Restored File Name and choose any location on your computer to save the file.

  4. Now type the name of the file and make sure to add.qbw at the end of the name.Hit Save and then OK.

  5. Open the newly created file to start the restore process.


TROUBLESHOOTING STEP 3: DOWNLOAD AND RUN STANDALONE CONVERSION TOOL


If you are using QuickBooks 2007, 08, or 2009, then you will need to use the QuickBooks Standalone Conversion Tool. For any other versions, you can use the inbuilt conversion tool. Once the file is converted, it cannot be restored in any prior version.
